Seamless vs Welded Steel Pipe: Which to Specify?
Both pipe types carry fluid and structure, but they are made differently and that difference decides pressure rating, tolerance and price.
How each is made
Seamless pipe is pierced from a solid round billet and rolled to size, so there is no weld seam. Welded pipe is formed from strip or plate and joined by ERW, LSAW or spiral welding along one straight or spiral seam.
Where each wins
- Seamless: high pressure, high temperature, oil and gas, boiler tubes. No seam means no seam-related failure risk.
- Welded (ERW): structural tubes, fencing, scaffolding, low and medium pressure lines. Tighter OD tolerance and clearly cheaper.
- Large diameters above 610 mm are normally spiral or LSAW welded.
Tolerance and price
Welded pipe holds tighter outside diameter tolerance because it is formed from controlled strip. Seamless runs 20-40 percent more expensive in common sizes, which is why structural and mechanical applications rarely need it.
